Review: 'The House Across the Lake' by Riley Sager

the house across the lake

Rising from the rocking chair onto legs unsteady after three (or four) day drinks, I watch the lake's glassy surface again break into sun-dappled circles. I've been watching the lake at a mental remove, which happens when you've seen something a thousand times. "Listen," Wilma says after what feels like three whole minutes. This information about The House Across the Lake was first featured in "The BookBrowse Review" - BookBrowse's membership magazine, and in our weekly "Publishing This Week" newsletter. Publication information is for the USA, and (unless stated otherwise) represents the first print edition.

Full Cast & Crew

They make for good viewing — a tech innovator, Tom is rich, and a former model, Katherine is gorgeous. But the more they get to know each other—and the longer Casey watches—it becomes clear that Katherine and Tom's marriage isn't as perfect as it appears. What she doesn't realize is that there's more to the story than meets the eye—and that shocking secrets can lurk beneath the most placid of surfaces. Packed with sharp characters, psychological suspense, and gasp-worthy plot twists, Riley Sager's The House Across the Lake is the ultimate escapist read...no lake house required.

Hockey is taking Utah by storm

Feeling worried about her newfound friend, she drives over to the Royces’ to discover Katherine is gone. Tom tells her that Katherine returned home to New York; but when Casey investigates with the help of her cousin, she discovers that Katherine hasn’t been by their building. After seeing a fake Instagram post from Katherine, Casey decides to visit another neighbor at the lake, Boone Conrad, to ask if he heard anything. The two of them watch the Royces’ house and witness Tom acting suspicious, So, they contact Boone’s friend, Detective Wilma Anson. The loss of her police officer father and the discovery of an abandoned car in a local lake raise chilling questions regarding a young woman’s family history.

Man identified after fatal crash between car, UTV …

Beating on the door, he tells her he knows that she has spied on him and broken into his home. Tom claims she doesn’t understand the situation and should leave him and Katherine alone. I leave the back porch of the lake house, step inside, and shuffle to the cramped foyer just beyond the front door. Among them is a pair of binoculars in a leather case hanging from a frayed strap, untouched for more than a year.

Once the boat's pointed toward the center of the lake, I start the outboard motor with an arm-aching tug. Five seconds later, the boat is gliding over the water, toward where I last saw the circular ripples but now see nothing. Binoculars in hand, I return to the back porch and stand at the railing, scanning the lake. The ripples reappear, and in the epicenter, a hand emerges from the water.

Casey realizes with horror that Tom is still suspect, and at that very moment he sneaks up and tries to kill her. The two grapple and Tom dies in the lake water but is repossessed by Len, leading his body to become reanimated. However, Casey smashes the last remaining bottle of wine and kills Len within Tom’s body a third and final time. Right now, though, my main concern is getting back to the boat at all. I didn't think to grab a life vest for myself, and now my strokes are slowing and my heart is pounding and I can no longer feel my legs kicking, even though I think they still are.

But the more they get to know each other—and the longer Casey watches—it becomes clear that Katherine and Tom’s marriage isn’t as perfect as it appears. When Katherine suddenly vanishes, Casey immediately suspects Tom of foul play. What she doesn’t realize is that there’s more to the story than meets the eye—and that shocking secrets can lurk beneath the most placid of surfaces.

But then I think again about Len, dead for more than a year now, his body found crumpled on the shore of this very lake. But when I hook the life vest around her neck and flip her over, she doesn't look alive. Afloat only because of the life vest and with her head tilted toward the sky, she resembles a corpse.

What Happened to the Bennetts

Reviewers favorably compared the book to the classic film Rear Window and a movie adaptation is planned. The next day, Casey begins spying on the Royces with a pair of binoculars. Her voyeurism is made easy by the Royces’ glass wall that faces her house and allows her access to their lives. While watching, she begins to see disputes between Tom and Katherine that make her wonder about their marriage.

Casey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress trying to escape a streak of bad press, has retreated to the peace and quiet of her family's lake house in Vermont. Casey Fletcher is a 35-year-old widow who returns to her family’s lake house in Vermont after a downward spiral following her husband’s death. Leaving behind her career and public life, she settles in on the shores of the dark, unfathomable Lake Greene and prepares to spend her days drinking and trying to avoid memories of the past. That night while drunk and spying on the Royces’ house, Casey sees Tom watching her with his own pair of binoculars. He then gets in his car and drives to her house while she scrambles to lock the doors and turn off the lights.

Her neighbor is the beautiful Katherine Royce, a former supermodel married to the CEO of a tech company called Mixer. The evening after she rescues Katherine, the Royces show up at her dock with an expensive bottle of wine. But when Katherine passes out in the yard, the evening is cut short, and Casey is left with some concerns.

She said there was a detour when she was on her way home from work when she saw a big white tent and knew something was wrong. The home sustained substantial damage, and a notice on the door Wednesday evening cautioned that the house was unsafe to enter or occupy. All the memories that Casey has been struggling to repress come rushing back in. Casey recalls the morning she found evidence of the murders of the three missing girls in Len’s tacklebox and, after drugging him, killed him by pushing him into the lake. Casey is terrified and determined to end Len’s reign of horror, believing Katherine has truly been possessed. Celebrity scandal and a haunted lake drive the narrative in this bestselling author’s latest serving of subtly ironic suspense.

A gust of wind lashes rain against the French doors that lead to the back porch. Both of us pause a moment to watch the droplets smacking the glass. Already, the storm is worse than the TV weatherman said it would be-and what he had predicted was already severe. The tail end of a Category 4 hurricane turned tropical storm as it swerved like a boomerang from deep inland back to the North Atlantic. Alcoholic actress Casey Fletcher has retreated to her family's cabin at Lake Greene, Vermont in order to hide from the press.

There wasn't time for words as I clawed, kicked, and climbed my way up the side until I was able to flop onto the boat floor like a recently caught fish. Getting the woman on board was even harder, seeing how her near-death experience had sapped all her energy. It took so much tugging and lifting on my part that, once she was in the boat, I was too exhausted to move, let alone speak.

The movement is located in the dead center of the lake-too far away to see clearly. Wilma remains quiet, hoping I'll say more and possibly incriminate myself. All announced by the ticking of the grandfather clock in the living room, which acts as a steady beat backing the song of the storm. If a lifetime of Flintstones jokes teaches you anything, it's deep patience. "I was just there. The house is unlocked. That fancy car of his is still in the driveway. Nothing inside seems to be missing. Except for him." "Have you watched the Royce house at all this evening?" she says.

I can't tell if the person is faceup or facedown, alive or dead. All I can see are the shadows of outstretched limbs in the water and a tangle of hair floating like kelp. I get a mental picture of Len in this very position and yell toward the shore. Bourbon glass in hand, I head upstairs, into the first bedroom on the right.

So scarily, unbearably exhausted that for a moment I consider taking the woman's life vest for myself and letting her drift into the depths. That last thought-of my husband, of how he died in this same deep water-propels me into action. I push off the railing, the movement jiggling the ice in the bourbon glass next to the rocking chair.

She and Conrad begin to investigate the case of the missing girls. Casey's suspicions turn to Conrad himself when she discovers that Conrad was at one point a suspect in his wife's death. Feeling she can no longer trust anyone else, Casey takes matters into her own hands. She breaks into the Royce home and finds Katherine tied up in the basement, but still alive.

The woman shifts in her seat, revealing a flash of bright bathing suit deep within the blanket. And so inappropriate for autumn in Vermont it makes me wonder how she even ended up here. If she told me aliens had zapped her to Lake Greene from a white-sand beach in the Seychelles, I'd almost believe it. Neither one of us speaks again until we're both safely in the boat.

She complains of headaches and dissociative episodes before collapsing from the heavy drinking. Casey and Boone begin to watch the Royce house together, and in doing so grow closer. Boone suggests that they go into town to see what they can find out, and while in town they have a frank conversation about alcohol. Although Casey is drawn to Boone, she still feels compelled to go home alone and binge drink to avoid the memories at the edges of her mind. I can't save her without saving myself first, and she might already be beyond rescue.

The result is an addictive beach read that fans will devour in one sitting and leave feeling thoroughly sated. The House Across the Lake is a thriller novel by American author Todd Ritter, writing under the pen name Riley Sager, published through Dutton in 2022. The novel is a fast-paced mystery wherein a woman uncovers secrets about her lake house neighbors and herself as she plays voyeur through a pair of binoculars. Filled with unexpected twists and turns, The House Across the Lake has been compared to Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window and praised for its modern take on the genre.

In the process, she uncovers eerie, darker truths that turn a tale of voyeurism and suspicion into a story of guilt, obsession and how looks can be very deceiving. It is revealed that Len was the serial killer behind the three dead girls. When Casey found out, she drugged him and drowned him in Lake Greene. Since then, Len's ghost has been haunting the lake, waiting for a new body to possess. He took over Katherine's body when she fell in the lake and was rescued by Casey. HOLLADAY, Utah (ABC4) — Hazmat and fire officials were at the scene of a planned detonation in Holladay on Tuesday night, where neighbors said there were reports of dynamite in a home.

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERNamed a most-anticipated summer book by USA Today, People, E! Casey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress trying to escape a streak of bad press, has retreated to the peace and quiet of her family’s lake house in Vermont. Armed with a pair of binoculars and several bottles of bourbon, she passes the time watching Tom and Katherine Royce, the glamorous couple living in the house across the lake. They make for good viewing—a tech innovator, Tom is powerful; and a former model, Katherine is gorgeous. One day on the lake, Casey saves Katherine from drowning, and the two strike up a budding friendship.

The reviews are necessarily limited to those that were available to us ahead of publication. Casey takes Katherine/Len to her home and forces him to reveal where he hid the bodies of the three girls. She sends the information to the authorities, then tricks Len into moving from Katherine's body into hers and drowns herself in the lake, only to be rescued by the now-conscious Katherine.

"It almost looked like he deliberately lined up behind our car and just slowly pushed it all the way into their house," Hight said. "The people that heard it — it was just a very slow, screeching sound." After first refusing to go along with her plan to call it an accident, Mark agrees when Carol tells him that they will meet up again later and live off her dead husband's money. Mark angrily confronts her, but she sneers that she only used him and that there is nothing he can do about it without implicating himself. Mark decides to confess, thinking that, although it will probably mean a prison sentence for him, it will mean the rope for Carol.

Packed with sharp characters, psychological suspense, and gasp-worthy plot twists, Riley Sager’s The House Across the Lake is the ultimate escapist read . Sager’s debut, Final Girls (2017), was fun and beautifully crafted. His most recent novels—Home Before Dark (2020) and Survive the Night (2021) —have been fun and a bit rickety. Narrator Casey Fletcher grew up watching her mother dazzle audiences, and then she became an actor herself. While she never achieves the “America’s sweetheart” status her mother enjoyed, Casey makes a career out of bit parts in movies and on TV and meatier parts onstage. Then the death of her husband sends her into an alcoholic spiral that ends with her getting fired from a Broadway play.

I put one arm around her waist and use the other to start paddling back to the boat. Hold on tight while also holding onto the likely/definitely dead woman and hope I regain enough lung power to scream again. Yet another image of Len pushes into my brain as I scramble for the anchor tied to one of the cleats on the boat's rim. The anchor isn't heavy-only twenty pounds-but weighty enough to keep the boat from drifting. I drop it into the water, the rope attached to it hissing against the side of the boat as it sinks to the lake's bottom. I squint, trying to emerge from the bourbon haze long enough to see what it is.

1 6: What Are the Elements of Art and the Principles of Art? Humanities LibreTexts

elements of design and art

As mentioned previously, more information is needed about the individual sample images. Aside from the need for more contemporary examples (or links to contemporary work outside of the text), the information presented is relevant. Much of the text is historical so will remain so for as long as the text is available. The arrangement of content is easily modifiable for future editions. More contemporary work could be added, making the content even more up-to-date.

Explore Scale to Create Eye-Catching Visuals

However, some of its sections can be incorporated into already prepared lessons, in particular Chapter 1, 4, 5, and 11, which from my perspective are the strongest. The textbook is not overly self-referential and some parts can be easily used as a supplemental material in combination with other educational resources. I like that each chapter begins with a section on "learning outcomes" and concludes with a review of key concepts. If your course includes tests or quizzes, this consistent structure would make it easier to construct the texts/quizzes and would serve as a nice study guide for students.

What Are the Principles of Design?

The book appears to be accurate, error-free and unbiased--although I did catch one inaccurate statement regarding the Vietnam War Memorial. This conflict between what the artist says and what the book says is worth noting. It did make me a bit concerned that other material may also be inaccurate—but I did not catch any other inaccurate statements. As mentioned below in “Clarity”, the writing is clear—but undergraduate students might be more immediately engaged with the material if it was more often connected to a contemporary iteration of the social issue at hand. We are introduced to Maria Luisa of Parma immediately within the Class section (8.3.4)—which I find quite interesting. However, I wonder if an undergraduate or non-major might desire a class reference that they can relate more to?

Formal analysis

Even thick paint will leave the texture of the brush marks for the viewer to see. How this is done is by the careful use of value and specific marks / brush strokes which then mimic the actual texture. A colour has intensity called chroma, also known as saturation, brightness or purity. The more pure the colour is (less of other colours mixed in), the more intense or saturated it is. In painting only small amounts of saturated colours are usually used as accents.

Warm and Cool Colors

The organization of the topics in this book are clearly stated and work as a logical progression from one theme and area of art to another. Having said that, the topics can stand alone as needed for any given presentation within a class lesson. The text is internally consistent with respect to terminology used and the framework of each chapter. There is some inconsistency with including locations of architectural sites in image captions. I think it would be easy to organize this text anyway you like when teaching, although the flow, the way one chapter leads into another, is nice, so I personally would not change it.

And finally, your design can have one of these two color systems – CMYK or RGB. To choose the right one for your art, you need to first analyze where it’ll be used. For example, blue usually evokes emotions of tranquility, trust, and stability, while red is a louder color expressing passion, excitement, and sometimes anger. So, knowing the psychology of colors will help you decide whether you should go with red, blue, or maybe yellow and what colors you should mix with them for the best result.

The Ultimate Collection of Elements of Art Examples and Definitions

The text is well balanced between the authors’ assertions and well-documented quotes and information from a variety of sources. Generally clear and readable, although as mentioned elsewhere in this review, at times overly simplistic and rambling and repetitive. And, as mentioned earlier, the labels for the works of art are in need of correction with emphasis placed on the artwork rather than open source. I did not notice any culturally insensitive or offensive content.

This can be especially helpful to international students and students with cognitive disabilities. This text is current enough for the average art appreciation class. Since it is mostly based on works of the past, it will need little updating. I found this textbook to be accurate and unbiased, although more examples of Non-Western art could have been added.

As described elsewhere, it may suffer a little from its lack of discussion of contemporary genres, artists, techniques, etc. The text displays consistency throughout and does a good job of integrating key terms and concepts throughout its chapters. The bolded key terms that appear as a glossary at the close of each chapter is especially helpful, as well as the "test yourself" sections and introductory concepts that start each chapter. Such stand-alone devices are a great boon to students and surely aid with comprehension. This text successfully manages the difficult task of synthesizing a plethora of approaches when studying art and its history. It considers numerous ethical, philosophical, and thematic issues typically left out of traditional survey books.

We often judge art by how effectively the artist used these design fundamentals even before we learn about them. Unity results from the successful consolidation of varied elements using consistent artistic treatments. Repetition of colors, textures, and shapes produces coherence.

These principles include balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity/variety. Each principle plays a pivotal role in organizing or arranging the visual elements in a design, ultimately shaping the viewer's experience. For a deeper understanding and exploration of how these principles relate to visual aesthetics in art and design, refer to the chapter on Visual Aesthetics from the Encyclopedia of Human-Computer Interaction. This comprehensive resource provides insights into the interconnectedness of design principles in various mediums. Material is organized thematically rather than chronologically using a comparative model. The chapters on forms, materials, description, symbolic interpretation, aesthetics, architectural form, identity, power, ritual, and ethics, also encourage the reader to make connections to contemporary art and culture.

Again, with the chapters arranged thematically with the same structure scaffolding each one (learning outcomes, introduction, before you move on and key terms) the text was consistent and the framework extremely clear. I did not find any examples where key terms were overlapping, confusing or contradictory. Overall there is an attempt to draw from different cultures to connect to the themes and concepts without being overly biased. As mentioned earlier, more examples of non-western art might be helpful. Also, more contemporary examples and connecting them to issues that are currently relevant like identity and protest etc. It presents information in an accessible manner and clearly defines most terms.

I particularly appreciated the inclusion of definitions for artist made prints versus reproductions to be helpful for students to understand the difference. The authors organized the text effectively, considering the amount of material covered (see above). I appreciate how the authors include a set of learning outcomes at the start of each chapter and have "tests" throughout as well as "key concepts" and glossaries. This book does a great job covering a broad spectrum of the context and meaning of art and design, and consistently provides visual examples. For the most part, the text is very relevant, especially its chapters on themes in art.

This might be especially problematic for instructors teaching in a 10-week term system, or who would supplement the text with additional lessons focused on the history of art (which is omitted from this volume). The interface of the textbook was effective overall with no significant issues that would distract or confuse the reader. Of necessity, the textbook provides links to works of art that are not reproducible in the textbook due to copyright issues.

The 7 Elements of Art

We also have Hierarchical Proportion, where the size of the objects is determined by their importance in the composition, not by the regular sizes or “real” proportions. These different patterns are not used solely as visual elements but also hold a deeper, symbolic meaning that adds interest and emotion to the artwork. You can show movement in your work through rhythm and repetition, with repeating shapes and colors that guide the viewer’s attention from one point to another. Diagonal lines can be particularly useful when depicting a sense of movement or action and horizontal lines can be used to depict calm and stillness. The simplicity of the shapes blends perfectly together and forms a completion of objects that aren't there but are perceived by the eye. It's when every design element and principle comes together as one, creating harmonious flow and tranquility.

The 9 Principles of Design and How to Use Them

elements of design and art

The topics and objectives of each chapter are clear and flow in a logical format. While there could be an argument for some readjustment of chapter ordering, it progresses in a thoughtful format. However, it may require updating in the next three years to expands coverage particularly the diversity of the subject matter covered, illustrations, and invariably to bring new content into the chapters.

Symmetry vs. Asymmetry - Recalling basic design principles

Finally, the discussion on appropriation is very timely, as is the component that addresses museums. The questions posed regarding collecting and display practices are often left out of introductory texts, but are extremely relevant in contemporary times. The authors organize the information in a manner that effectively builds upon previous sections, while also maintaining the ability to assign specific chapters and sections independently. The images of techniques and processes are also helpful (i.e. relief wood carving), as are the detailed explanations of media (i.e. what is egg tempera?). The key terms found throughout the text are also very helpful and are perhaps more useful at the end of each chapter, rather than a comprehensive glossary at the end of the book. Emphasis in design principles refers to intentionally highlighting specific elements to draw attention and create a focal point.

All open-source articles on design principles

You can print and hang in your classroom as posters/anchor charts or you can cut each element and principle of art in its own individual card to use as a lesson manipulative. The number of design principles may vary sometimes once you go down that path of discovery, however, there are some design elements and principles that are considered to be the basic and most important ones. For a moment, think about a website you recently visited and enjoyed scrolling through. The well-executed use of negative space, often filled with white or a solid color, made the content digestible, inviting, and balanced.

Visual design elements and principles

We now have an understanding of the elements of art, which we described as almost being like the colors on your palette. ” directly relates to the elements of art, and as we go through the principles of design in art, we will see how these determine the artwork’s overall result. These could almost be seen in your paintbrushes, so to say; each paintbrush will be unique, providing a specific function to bring the composition together. Have you ever wondered what the building blocks of a painting are? In this article, we will explain what these elements of art and principles of design are.

Everything About Social Media Videos: Tips + Templates to Get Started

In Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” we can see how the composition and emphasis in the massive curling waves captured just before the crash creates anticipation and an almost palpable sense of motion. The textures of the different elements present in the piece, along with the many details on the waves and foam emphasize the sea’s chaotic movement. Balance refers to the distribution of visual weight in a composition. Balance can be symmetrical, where both sides of a composition are even, or asymmetrical, where you can create balance through contrasting elements of different sizes or positions. The principles include contrast, balance, pattern, variety, and unity. These guidelines use elements to tell a story or atmosphere and help blend the elements effectively.

Space can give the illusion of objects in an artwork being close, far away, or overlapping one another. Value in art refers to the lightness and darkness of colors and is often described in varying levels of contrast. To have unity in your design, all parts of your composition should be in complete harmony with each other to be visually appealing in the viewer’s eyes.

Formal analysis

The examples are very European and this is why I would not use this as the sole text for any class. I would need to supplement with more contemporary/culturally diverse perspectives. Contemporary artists are mentioned, but few visual examples are used. Contrast refers to the placements of different elements in a composition, for example, color, space, shape, or others. By utilizing contrast strategically, it will convey a sense of emphasis, or otherwise stated; it will emphasize a certain area in the composition. Variety creates an ongoing interest in a composition, it is the utilization of various art elements like color, line, or texture.

It comes organically once you’re done with your contrast and balance. Texture refers to the tactile qualities of a surface, actual or implied. Texture is like the secret ingredient that adds depth and authenticity to our experiences. It’s the crispy crust on a warm slice of pizza, the softness of a fluffy cat, or the rough grain of an old wooden table. Form, the shape and structure of something as distinct from its substance, is like the secret sauce that turns flat ideas into three-dimensional experiences.

Another excellent example of the use of pattern in art is “Day and Night” by M.C. Escher, where the artist plays with pattern and composition to create an optical illusion. Not only pattern is used on the birds but in the fields and rivers. The pattern in this piece adds a sense of three-dimensionality and helps the artists emphasize the contrast between light and dark, day and night.

We see the whole formed by the dotted lines first, before perceiving the separate dotted lines in each of the images. A lack of unity in designs can create a sense of unease and chaos. In digital design, where the product shows up on a screen, colours mix additively, since the screen emits light and colours add to one another accordingly.
